The 4.2 MPa FM200 Gas Fire Extinguishing System is a high-pressure, piped extinguishing system. It consists of the following components:

  • HFC-227ea Gas.
  • HFC-227ea gas agent storage cylinder or bottle.
  • Container valve.
  • Solenoid valve or solenoid actuator.
  • High-pressure hose.
  • Nozzle.
  • Signal Device (Pressure Switch).
  • Manifold Pipe.
  • Driving gas nitrogen.
  • and a fire extinguishing agent pipeline.

4.2 Mpa FM200 Gas Fire Extinguishing System

4.2 MPa is the pressurised pressure of the drive gas nitrogen, which is a high-pressure gas.

Heptafluoropropane containers are filled with HFC-227ea extinguishing agent, to enable the extinguishing agent to be able to spray out quickly and forcefully, so we need additional high-pressure nitrogen to push out the extinguishing agent from the extinguishing agent storage cylinder.

The whole high-pressure gas extinguishing system has two sets of bottles: the extinguishing agent bottle set and the driving gas bottle set (nitrogen). Nitrogen cylinder sets connect to extinguishing agent cylinder sets to form a complete high-pressure fire protection system.

This kind of high-pressure fire extinguishing equipment is generally used in larger places, such as museums, archives, libraries, power distribution rooms, precision instrument rooms, offshore platforms, and so on.

It can be used in large industrial, commercial, and construction sites, mainly because it has the following characteristics:

  • The extinguishing agent (HFC-227ea) is clean and environmentally friendly.
  • Extinguishing agents are extremely efficient at extinguishing fires.
  • Fire extinguishing agents are relatively safe, and their spraying does not endanger human life or health.
  • Mature technology, the best substitute for halon fire extinguishing agent.

Heptafluoropropane is currently the most technologically mature gas-based fire extinguishing system in the world, and you can use and install it with confidence.

We have a short video to show you how a networked Heptafluoropropane fire suppression system works:

4.2 MPA FM200 Gas Fire Extinguishing System is a piping suppression system, which is used to protect larger defence zones.

It is the most popular fire protection system in the world today. It has the following characteristics:

Efficient fire-fighting capability

  • Rapid fire extinguishing: short spraying time (≤10-15 seconds), rapid suppression of fire, reduce thermal damage and secondary losses.
  • Chemical inhibition mechanism: Reduce the fire temperature by heat absorption decomposition, at the same time, interrupt the combustion chain reaction (free radical binding), effective for A/B/C/E type fire.
  • Low design concentration: only 7%-10% by volume is required to extinguish a fire, saving agent usage compared to carbon dioxide (34%-75%).

Clean and environmentally friendly (no residue)

  • Non-conductive and non-corrosive: no solid/liquid residue after spraying and releasing, which protects electronic equipment (e.g. servers, precision instruments) and archives of cultural relics.
  • Ozone Layer Friendly: ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential) is 0, which meets the Montreal Protocol requirements for halon alternatives.

Security & Compatibility

  • Low toxicity: NOAEL (No Adverse Effect Concentration) is 9%, much higher than the design concentration (≤10%), and the risk of spraying after evacuation of personnel is manageable.
  • Low pressure storage at ambient temperature: storage pressure 4.2 MPa (nitrogen boost), compared to IG541 (15 MPa) and carbon dioxide (high pressure/low temperature), the system is lighter and safer.

System Flexibility

  • Adaptation to complex spaces: can be extended through the pipe network to multiple protection zones, covering irregular or dispersed areas (e.g. cable jackets, underground facilities).
  • Small footprint: Compact cylinder set (vs. IG541 which requires multiple sets of cylinders), suitable for space-constrained server rooms or equipment rooms.

Heptafluoropropane (HFC-227ea) fire extinguishing system is widely used in places with harsh requirements on fire extinguishing environment because of its high efficiency, cleanliness, and no residue.

The following are typical application scenarios and their applicability:

  • Data Room.
  • Computer room.
  • Communications Base Station.
  • Telecommunication facilities.
  • Electrical facilities (e.g., substations, generator houses).
  • Museums, libraries, and archives.
  • Industrial clean rooms.
  • Precision instrument rooms.
  • Laboratory and Dangerous Goods Warehouse.
  • Railway facilities.
  • Ships and aviation.
  • Bank vaults.
  • Lithium battery storage plant.
  • Photovoltaic inverter room.
  • Hospital MRI rooms.
  • Ammunition depot.
  • Satellite measurement and control centre.
  • Switchgear.
  • UPS power supply room.
  • Data processing center.

Although Heptafluoropropane (HFC-227ea) fire extinguishing systems are efficient and clean, their design, installation and use need to follow strict safety regulations to avoid risks arising from improper operation.

The following are key considerations and operating guidelines:

  • CONCENTRATION CONTROL: The design concentration shall not exceed 10% (personnel safety limits of 9% NOAEL and 10.5% LOAEL) to prevent injury to personnel from residual HF (hydrofluoric acid) after spraying.
  • Sealing of the protected area: Ensure that the enclosure (windows, doors, vents) is sealed during spraying to avoid leakage of the extinguishing agent resulting in insufficient concentration.
  • Pressure relief port setting: Pressure relief ports must be set up, positioned at more than 2/3 of the net height of the protection area, with the area determined by calculation.
  • Storage environment requirements: the temperature between cylinders should be maintained at -10℃~50℃, avoiding exposure to sunlight or low temperature leading to pressure abnormality.
  • Cylinder sets need to be securely fixed and kept away from sources of ignition and corrosive environments.

Of course, due to the complexity of Heptafluoropropane fire extinguishing systems, there are other more considerations, please refer to our operating instructions document.
